CHAPTER 10

As soon as I stepped into the VHS store I felt my childhood memories of places like this come back to me at a thousand miles an hour. I’d forgotten just how big a VHS cassette was, and to see hundreds of them lining the shelves was a real blast from the past.

I was under the impression that Fitz remaining in his cat form was a strange form of protest against some perceived injustice that I was sure he’d tell me about later. He demanded that I carried him around the store so that he could see the titles more easily, asking me to ‘short-list’ movies so that he could further narrow down the choices until we found the perfect film.

I couldn’t see anything in here that had been released after 1995. I was more interested in the candy selection, but as I was acting as a personal assistant to my own familiar, I had to wait until he was done.

“Where do we stand with the moon thing?” he mewed, looking at Miller.

“For the millionth time, I can watch films with a moon in them, Fitz. And for the two-millionth time, I can shift at will. You might want to remember that because I’m pretty sure a werewolf can take down a regular old housecat any day of the week,” Miller snapped.

The casual death threats didn’t even register on my radar anymore, the two of them would bicker constantly and I didn’t know who the bigger instigator was. Fitz had a bark worse than his bite, that was for sure. If Miller actually wanted to do any harm, then Fitz wouldn’t stand a chance. Although Fitz did have magic powers which may give him the edge… I hoped to never find out.

“What about this?” I said, pointing at Sister Act.

“I watched it this morning while you were at work,” Fitz replied. “It was being streamed on one of those channels you pay for.”

“Then why are we in a VHS rental store?” I complained.

“It’s an experience, Sadie, a part of being a Hallow Haven-ette,” Miller said.

“Hallow Haven-ette? Not you too,” I groaned.

“Come on, they have push-pops over here! Remember those?”

Miller grabbed a basket from a stack of them and started filling it with candy that I hadn’t seen for over twenty years. There was no way that everything he was buying wasn’t at least two decades past its expiry date.

“Bram Stoker’s Dracula,” Fitz announced. “It’s perfect! Vampires, reincarnation, Gary Oldman! Come on, what could be better?”

“Is this going to be super offensive to Ryder? I can’t remember if I’ve seen this before,” I said, looking at the front cover of the box. “Do I need to give him any trigger warnings before he comes round? I can’t see the rating…”

“Just some vampire murder, but I don’t see how Ryder would get upset about that…” Fitz scoffed. “Unless you think he might be afraid that we all see vampire slaying as a form of entertainment and fear for his undead life? But I doubt he’d make that connection.
